This was how most of our listings were sourced, so it results in a much less populated calendar. This is one of many documentaries about climate change; many aren’t much fun, but with Leonardo DiCaprio at its center, this one offers crucial, current information, as well as a measure of hope. Actor/producer Fisher Stevens, who won an Oscar for his powerful dolphin documentary The Cove, directs Before the Flood, beginning with a reference to Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights and then traveling all over the world. DiCaprio starts out with a pessimistic outlook, but he keeps an open mind as he meets and talks with politicians, specialists, and scientists. He finds that, while problems persist, there are also many solutions that have begun to be implemented.
For example, viewers learn that simply by eating less beef, we could save enormous amounts of resources used to feed cattle (not to mention lessen the incredible amounts of methane gas they emit). Viewers are also told that it would help if companies were required to pay a tax on carbon emissions will help. (Stevens’ production paid a voluntary carbon tax.) If you saw — or didn’t see — An Inconvenient Truth, Chasing Ice, Merchants of Doubt, or others, then you should see this. Overall, it’s one of the most universal and possibly most helpful and hopeful of the recent climate change documentaries.
