My culture is not a costume

October 31 @ 11:00 pm

It’s the season for Halloween parties, homecoming celebrations and sporting events at schools across the our great state. Sometimes, those events have ethnic themes or mascots. Please be careful not to pick a costume that appropriates, mocks, or disrespects someone else’s culture. What is this? In a nutshell, it is the use of icons, rituals, aesthetic standards, regalia, or behavior from one culture by another. The person appropriating often has no knowledge of the significance of the icons or regalia or any understanding of the significance or history behind the cultural traditions. So as you choose a costume or party theme please remember my culture is not a costume. What you wear for one night can help create a stigma or perpetuate a misguided stereotype that I will have to wear for life. Thank you, please share this event to help raise awareness and have a happy harvest season.
